Learn More About the Fencing Exchange Project

At Fencing Exchange, we believe fencing should be a sport for everyone—not just those who can afford the gear. While fencing teaches focus, discipline, and confidence, the high cost of equipment often stops people from ever getting started. Our project was created to change that.

We collect gently used fencing gear and give it away to those who need it most—free of charge. By doing this, we’re removing financial barriers and helping more people access a sport that’s often seen as out of reach. From beginner fencers to under-resourced clubs and youth programs, we’re working to make the fencing community more inclusive, supportive, and connected.

How the Project Works

The process starts with donations. We reach out to fencing clubs, schools, and individual fencers to collect gear they no longer use. In many cases, this equipment is still in great condition—it’s just sitting unused in a closet or gear bag. Once collected, the gear is sorted, inspected, and organized by type and size by our team of volunteers. We make sure everything is safe, clean, and ready to be passed on.

The final step is where the heart of the project lives: giving the gear away. We organize community events where anyone in need of fencing equipment can come pick up what they need at no cost. These events are open to individuals, clubs, and programs that would benefit from extra support. Our goal is simple: to remove one of the biggest obstacles in fencing—access to gear—and open the door for more people to try and enjoy the sport.

Who We Support

We help a wide range of people and programs. Some are new fencers who are excited to try the sport but can’t afford a full set of equipment. Others are students in school or community programs where funding for sports is limited. We also work with clubs that want to offer gear to beginners or grow their programs but don’t have the resources to buy extra equipment.

By giving this gear a second life, we’re building a cycle of support—where experienced fencers and clubs can give back, and new fencers can get started without being held back by cost.

Why It Matters

The value of this project goes beyond the gear itself. Every mask, jacket, or blade we pass on represents a new opportunity—an invitation to try something new, to join a community, and to grow through challenge and discipline.

Fencing has so much to offer, but for too long, access to gear has been a gatekeeper. We’re working to change that by turning unused equipment into an entry point, not a barrier. In doing so, we’re helping grow a more diverse and welcoming fencing world.

How You Can Get Involved

There are several ways to support Fencing Exchange. If you have gear you no longer use, consider donating it. We accept all types of fencing equipment as long as it’s in safe, usable condition. If you’re interested in helping behind the scenes, we’re always looking for volunteers to help with sorting, organizing, outreach, and running events.

You can also help by spreading the word—share our project with your club, your coach, or a friend who might want to get involved. The more people who know about Fencing Exchange, the more gear we can collect, and the more impact we can make together.
